Feeding the city and solidarity

The right to the city is a cry of necessity and a demand for renewed cities that meet the needs and aspirations of citizens. However, although food is a pillar of human life, urban hunger is widespread and clearly contravenes the right to the city, few studies have linked these two rights. This essay addresses this gap by studying the Notre Quartier Nourricier community initiative, in Centre-Sud in Montreal, which creates an inclusive space in which citizens reclaim their neighborhood through the production and consumption of food, while developing a sense of belonging. to their living environment and their community.

Description

A constant din.
Burning concrete.
Grayness.
A horizon narrowed by thousands of buildings.
A neighborhood populated by strangers.

While the growth and sprawl of large urban centers continues in Canada as elsewhere, is it possible to imagine a new way of creating society? What if cities were also green and nourishing? This essay explores the role of food – beyond urban agriculture – in the reappropriation of neighborhoods by their residents.

What if, by (re)embedding food within the urban fabric, we reinvent the city?

With this repair essay, I hope to inspire a reconnection to others, to the world around us. Our future depends on it.
